Spring Breaks in the UK

UK Spring Holidays

With winter still with us, it is time for some sunshine thinking – where to book that spring break in the UK. Spring is an incredible time of year to be in Britain and for renting a cottage or apartment as a base for exploring some of the beautiful places England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales have to offer.

Whether inland or on the coast, spring is when nature begins to awaken and that means the new green leaves emerging in the great forests and the beginnings of lush grass on the moors. Huge areas of the UK are carpeted with flowers – primroses, bluebells, snowdrops, aconites, crocus and daffodils.

Spring is the time to dust off the walking boots and oil the mountain bikes and head for the hills, mountains and valleys that England and Wales, in particular, possess in abundance. Accommodation that might have been closed up for the winter gets its spring clean at this time to be ready for the rush of early-year bookings. So now is the time to check out Daltons Weekly for the first available dates for not only cottages and apartments but also caravans and mobile homes.

With the winter chill still maybe not off some of the more northerly parts of the UK, many people turn to the West County, the peninsula that includes Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset. It is especially popular in early spring because it can be a few degrees warmer than elsewhere in Britain – thanks to the Gulf Stream.

Spring Breaks Cornwall

Cornwall’s north and south coasts offer hundreds of excellent beaches, picturesque harbours, coves and inlets. The north Cornish coast, especially Newquay, is one of Britain’s best surfing venues.

Spring Breaks Devon

Devon has an excellent mix of beaches and coves and inland nature is at its springtime best on the famous moors  – Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moor. The west of Dorset is almost entirely designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the coastline a Natural World Heritage site.  It has exceptional and often unusual beaches at Chesil, Swanage, Studland and Lulworth Cove, plus the resorts of Weymouth and picturesque Lyme Regis. Northern England is rich in outdoor options such as hiking and biking and none more so than the Lake District in the north west.

Spring Breaks Wales

There are many places in Wales for a spring break, from the diverse southern coastline to the valleys and mountains of the north of the principality. Those looking for nature have a huge choice from the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean; the Brecon Beacons and Pembroke Coast national parks; and the peaks of Snowdonia.

Spring Breaks Norfolk

Bracingly chilly but sunlit days are part of the appeal of Britain’s coasts and there are many diverse options. Norfolk has abundant wildlife such as seals along its Wash coast and the fine landscape of the Norfolk Broads. The Suffolk coast excels for encouraging long and healthy family walks. The north-east coast has picturesque landscapes with sand dunes and rugged and, sometimes, crumbling cliffs.

Spring is not just a time for nature reawakening; seaside resorts come fully to life again. The shutters go up on many attractions that have taken a winter break in many coastal towns and there are resorts to suit all tastes.

Spring Breaks South Coast

Early holidays on the south coast of England range from quiet seaside towns to sophisticated places with a wide variety of entertainment.  The coast of the British mainland is scattered with resorts, large and small. These boast entertaining promenades loaded with the latest in games’ arcades, fast-food restaurants and funfairs.  Plymouth in Devon is a historic seaport with heritage sites such as Plymouth Hoe vying with trendy shops and an excellent selection of pubs, clubs and restaurants for the spring tourists’ attention. Bournemouth is Dorset’s primary tourism spot for its beaches and resort facilities. Further along the south coast are Eastbourne, Brighton and Hastings whose pace of life can vary but there is something for everyone.

Spring Breaks Wales

The Welsh capital city of Cardiff has undergone a renaissance recently led by big investment in developments such as the Millennium Stadium and former dockland areas. It is now a vibrant city of good restaurants, pubs, clubs and entertainment centres but has retained its history, too. While in south Wales Barry is the place for old-fashioned resort arcades and funfair thrill rides.

Spring breaks Norfolk

Norfolk is home to the popular family resort of Great Yarmouth with its four mile seafront boasting piers, leisure centres, white-knuckle rides, restaurants, pubs and clubs.

Spring breaks Essex

Essex has Southend-on-Sea and Clacton while, in the north-west, the queen of the Lancashire coast is Blackpool. Its highlights that keep thousands of visitors happy every year include the famous Tower, the Golden Mile and the Pleasure Beach with 40 acres of thrill rides, shows and excitement.
