It is taken for granted by the British holidaymaker but there is probably nowhere on Earth that has done more for our well being than the Mediterranean Sea.

Affectionately called the “Med” by the millions who head from the UK to its refreshing and sunny shores every year, we, as Britons, are very lucky to be a few hours’ flying time of anywhere within the Med’s relaxing atmosphere.

At this time of year with autumn officially approaching there is even more reason to love the Mediterranean and the destinations that it rings.

As a chill creeps into Britain’s climate, around the Med the days generally remain sunny and warm and the evenings are still balmy enough to and eat on the terrace or balcony of one’s villa or apartment.

Even better is that, at this is the time of year, there are plenty of bargain prices going. The middle season brings reduced Mediterranean accommodation and car rental prices. Car rental brokers are currently offering bargain prices for vehicles, some from as littler as £11 a day in certain destinations. Budget air fares also make this time of year a good time to take a break.

An autumn holiday enables people to get to the sunshine and the blue waters of the Mediterranean outside the traditional family high season – leaving beaches, roads and attractions less crowded.

It is also when many people reluctant to take a “lobster” holiday – lying on the beach getting very red – can head for the Med and its more comfortable temperatures – sunny and averaging 20C.

Holiday destinations around the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean touches 22 countries and all but a handful are popular with British holidaymakers

Greece -

The Greek mainland has many good beach areas but it also offers more history than most destinations. Athens has its Parthenon, Acropolis, museums and good food while elsewhere on the mainland there are ruins relating to all of Greece’s past.

Croatia -

Its long Adriatic coast running from Kvarner Gulf to Dubrovnik is spearheading a new popularity with Britons. The Dubrovnik, Makarska and Istrian rivieras have all the ingredients for a good holiday – beaches, weather and watersports.

Italy -

Take your pick for how to holiday here – art, sunshine, mountain, beaches and Rome. Walking and cycling in Tuscany, skiing and extreme sports in the Alps, history in Rome and art in Florence or Venice are all on the menu.

Turkey -

The recent terrorism may temporarily hit its tourist trade but will remain popular with those who love the country’s Aegean and Mediterranean coastlines where there is a huge choice of resort areas, large and small. The attractions are beaches, clear turquoise sea and watersports

France -

Its Mediterranean coast is its famous Riviera running from the Italian border to Spain. Good food and wine go without saying in France but the South adds great beaches, if a little crowded at times, and the ambience of Nice, St Tropez and Cannes.

Spain -

Arguably the most popular Mediterranean country for British holidaymakers. The so-called “costas” running from France to Gibraltar – Brava, Blanca, Almeria, Dorada and del Sol – all have fine beaches and most facilities a holidaymaker could want. Best-known resorts include Marbella, Benidorm and Alicante.

Balearic Islands -

Like Spain, of which they are part, the Balearics have been hugely popular for decades. Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza are the top spots.

Malta -

Not well endowed for long, sandy beaches but swimmers, snorkellers and scuba divers have excellent sea quality, sea temperatures averaging 23°C and no tides to contend with.

Greek Islands -

With 2,000 islands across five archipelagos there is loads of choice. Popular islands are Rhodes, Corfu, Crete, Kephalonia, Skiros and Samos but holidaymakers are exploring many others.

Portugal -

Actually has no Mediterranean coast but many holidaymakers would give it an “honorary mention” for its excellent holiday potential – Algarve beaches and an excellent range of accommodation.
