Greece holidays
Visitors this year to Greece will find a noticeable difference as it prepares to host the Olympic Games' return in 2004 to their original home. The complete facelift of the capital Athens is benefiting holiday makers before the Olympics open. It has a new airport, new roads and the public transport infrastructure has been improved including a new Metro and anti-pollution policies are in place. The city, in general, has been refurbished ready for its place in the world limelight.
Greece, just three and a half hours' flying time from the UK, remains hugely popular with British families. Sun, good food and drink and the ability to eat al fresco for all but about two months of the year are just a few attributes. Amid its new look and modernity, Athens remains the cultural and historical centre visitors still flock to for such world-renowned icons as the Acropolis and the Parthenon.
Relaxing in modern-day Athens centres on Ommonia Square and its narrow, traffic-free streets with trendy bars and restaurants. Athens also has its own Riviera, the Apollo Coast beaches just 30 minutes from the city centre, and Cape Sounion's Temple of Poseidon is worth the trip.
Elsewhere on the mainland, Old Corinth has many Roman ruins and Delphi is one of the most visited historic places for its famous Oracle and Apollo's Temple. In Thessaloniki a highlight is a museum dedicated to Alexander the Great.
Greece's 1,500 islands would take a lifetime to fully explore but a number are eternal favourites with Britons - among them Kos, Corfu and Rhodes.
Kos
Kos, in the Dodecanese islands, is upmarket but mixes a hectic nightlife, Roman and Hellenic ruins and excellent beaches at Kardamena, Mastihari and Kamari.
Corfu
In the Ionian islands, wooded Corfu is very familiar to Britons for its beaches and coves. Corfu is among the most popular of the islands, not least because of beaches at Kavos, Sidari and Dassia.
Kefalonia
Mountainous Kefalonia has become very popular on the strength of its setting for the Captain Corelli's Mandolin novel and film.
Rhodes
Rhodes has good sandy beaches on its east coast, the lively town of Lindos and historic sites at Kameiros and Rhodes old town. The rockier west coast offers respite from crowds.
Crete
Crete clings to its Minoan heritage through the Palace of King Minos and an archaeological museum. The scenery varies from rugged hills to picturesque forests and sandy beaches.
Food in Greece is multi-cultural; kids can get their burgers and chips, and pasta, pizza and other foreign tastes are catered for. Local cuisine includes moussaka, kebabs, houmus and baklava. Greek summers are hot and dry reaching a temperature peak of 30C-plus in July and August although the islands have the added relief of sea breezes. Expect rain from October to February. There is no shortage of flights to Greece and its islands. Both scheduled services and charters operate virtually year round.
