Croatia holidays
Croatia has been quickly gaining in popularity. This isn't surprising as it has blue seas, pebble beaches, rolling hills, beautiful cities, and far fewer crowds than most European destinations. The climate is Mediterranean along the Adriatic coast, giving warm dry summers and mild winters, with 2,600 hours of sunlight on average making it one of the sunniest coastlines in Europe. Heading inland, the climate is continental meaning hot summers and cold, snowy winters.
The Croatian Sea is not only attractive to those who enjoy sailing as a pastime, but it also draws many to the underwater world. Divers must hold a current diving licence issued by the Croatian divers' association. They can be purchased through diving clubs and centres as well as authorised tourist agencies. Other activities can vary immensely. Such diverse sports include climbing, diving, hunting, sailing, fishing, horseriding, cycling, even skiing - the list is endless.
The main population centres are Zagreb, the capital (with a population of just over one million), Osijek in the northwest, and the ports of Rijeka, and Split in the south. Zagreb contains more museums per square foot than any other city in the world, but it doesn't mean that there is nothing else to do. One of the many pastimes natives enjoy is sitting in one of the many cafes watching the world go by. In the evening, you can visit one of the numerous restaurants, and finish the day in the one of the bars or clubs.
The popular town of Dubrovnik, sometimes known as the 'Pearl of the Adriatic', also has much to explore offering its visitors an abundance of beauty and culture. Many attractive mediaeval buildings, marbled paved squares, monasteries, palaces and cobbled streets, all enclosed within the huge walls surrounding the town. All kinds of music can be heard in the evenings from the many delightful restaurants designed for alfresco dining, bars and even a few discos to enjoy. Whichever your choice of venue, from a café on the old harbours edge, to restaurants in small coves, life is second to none in this fascinating and unspoilt city.
