Costa de la Luz holidays

Picture of Cadiz, Costa de la Luz, Spain

Starting it its most southerly point, Tarifa, the unspoilt Costa de la Luz traces the Atlantic coastline until it merges with Portugal's Algarve. The former moorish town of Tarifa is now a top windsurfing venue, which attracts the younger holiday crowds to its sail-boarding schools, and lively cafes and bars.

Unique to the Costa de la Luz are the historic 'white villages' such as Vejer and Frontera with their white buildings set in narrow lanes making these areas not only unforgettable, but also extremely pleasing to the eye. Along the winding coastline are secluded coves and beaches relatively under developed compared with those of the other Spanish Costas. Those to look out for are Conil de la Frontera and Playa de los Lances.

Cadiz is the major city of the region - a port that has preserved its past in the shady parks and the impressive architecture of two castles and the Cathedral Nueva. The main product of nearby Jerez de la Frontera - home of the sherry, which will be familiar to British drinkers, and tours are available of the bodegas of famous names such as Harveys and Sandeman. It also has an old town to explore as well as a zoo. Huelva, further west, is rich in Christopher Columbus memorabilia as it was from here that the explorer set off in 1492 to discover the New World. A monument to him stands at Punta del Sebo. Also housed in the cultural town of Huelva is the marshland beauty of Coto Donana National Park, which offers many species peace and quiet, and a 30km beach.

Eating out in Spain is inexpensive, the food is varied including many fish varieties. The most southerly of the Spanish Costas are accessible by a two-hour flight from the UK to Jerez, Gibraltar or Malaga, and airlines include scheduled, charter and no-frills services.
