Costa de Almeria holidays

Picture of Adra, Costa de Almeria, Spain

Families considering the Costa de Almeria for their villa holiday may think it one of Spain's lesser-known spots but they are wrong. It is known worldwide to devotees of Clint Eastwood movies who will have seen its dry landscape in the 'Spaghetti Westerns' such as Fistful of Dollars. The movies' director Sergio Leone was taken with the arid and rugged beauty of the Sierra Alhamilla mountain range as an ideal backdrop to films. At Tabernas, decades after the films were released, there are several spaghetti western sets and Mini Hollywood, a town built by Leone, open during the summer when cowboy shootouts and bank robberies are staged.

Costa de Almeria is the sunniest, driest part of the continent and for holiday makers, that carries a guarantee of many days of sunshine throughout the year. Sitting at the south eastern corner of Spain, Costa de Almeria developed later than its neighbouring costas as a holiday destination. Villa developments are continuing to sprout up although not in such numbers to be detrimental to the area. Popular locations are the Cortijo Grande Valley and the resort area of Majocar.

The Costa de Almeria lies to the east of the Costa del Sol and is part of the south eastern province of Almeria. The capital city of the same name is a former Roman port where the evidence of Moroccan occupation remains through its Moorish architecture - particularly the upper city with its narrow streets and the walls of the Alcazaba fortress.

The main resorts of this fairly short costa when compared to the Costa del Sol or Costa Brava include Adra, Roquetas, Cabo de Gata, Aguadulce, Mojacar and San José. It is a coastline of excellent beaches offering safe holiday conditions for families. Water skiing, windsurfing and sailing are the main sea bourne activities and Cabo de Gata, with its picturesque beach and crystal-clear waters, is particularly popular with scuba divers.

The climate makes the region a year-round favourite with golfers and two excellent courses along the Costa de Almeria are at Almerimar and Aguadulce. Hikers and mountain bikers have the lunar landscape of the Sierra Alhamilla for both nature walking and bird watching.

Flying time to most of the Costa de Almeria is around two hours and charter airlines use regional airports Almeria and Malaga for direct flights into the region.
